Meet Lamont Ratchford: A Leader for District 3
Updated: Sep 4
In the heart of District 3, a new wave of leadership is emerging, and at the forefront is Lamont Ratchford. With a vision for progress and a commitment to community, Ratchford is not just a candidate; he is a beacon of hope for residents seeking positive change. This blog post will explore his journey, values, and the impact he aims to make in District 3.

My Story: Family, Service, Education & Community
Education was incredibly important to my parents. They believed education could open doors, create opportunities, and give their children a foundation for a better future. That belief became part of the foundation of our family.
Both of my sisters were educated in the Rock Hill school system. They went on to serve our country during Operation Desert Storm, and both later earned advanced degrees. Their journeys showed me what education, service, hard work, and determination can make possible.
My own life was shaped by Rock Hill Schools as well. Throughout high school, I spent four years in JROTC while also participating in sports for four years. Those experiences became an important part of who I am.
JROTC helped change the direction of my life. It taught me discipline, leadership, responsibility, structure, and service. Athletics taught me teamwork, perseverance, commitment, and what it means to work toward a common goal.
Those opportunities showed me something I still believe today: some of the most important lessons our students learn happen both inside and outside the classroom.
I later chose to serve in the military, in part as a way to help pay for college. From there, education became a lifelong journey. I earned a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees and began pursuing my Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. While I'm currently taking a break from my doctoral program, completing that journey remains important to me.
Today, I'm a husband and proud father of two children. One graduated from the Rock Hill school system, and the other is currently a middle school student. Both have been heavily involved in academics and athletics, so our family's connection to Rock Hill Schools continues into another generation.
When I think about why I'm running for School Board, I think about the values my parents gave me and the opportunities Rock Hill Schools gave me.
Education helped change the trajectory of my life. JROTC helped give me direction. Athletics helped build my character. Military service strengthened my commitment to leadership and service. And my parents taught me never to stop learning.
That's why I believe we must provide our students with more than one pathway to success. Academics matter. Athletics matter. JROTC matters. Career and technical education matters. The arts matter. Extracurricular activities matter.
Sometimes one teacher, one coach, one mentor, or one program can change the direction of a young person's life.
I know because it happened to me.
Now, I want to help make sure every student in Rock Hill has that same opportunity.
The "WHY"
I am running because I believe our students, teachers, and community deserve a school system that never settles for simply being good enough. Our success should not be measured by how we compare to other districts—we should set our own standard of excellence.
I want to put students first, support and respect our teachers, strengthen accountability, and ensure responsible leadership for our community.
I’m not running because I believe everything is wrong. I’m running because I believe we can be better, and I’m willing to serve and do the work to help us get there.
Students First. Community Always.
